Sweet boy
Guillermo (along with the rest of the family) was sick all during the Christmas festivities. He has been so sweet considering his ailments which run from the normal cold to projectile spitting. Pobrecito.

6 week weigh in
Went to our mommy club today and had our weigh in for the week. 11 lbs, 1 oz. The lactation specialist there promises that there is no such thing as over-feeding when breastfeeding, and that his is a good weight and just building his brain...should be a big brain at this rate :)

3 weeks old today
Guillermo is 3 weeks old today! We went to a mommy/baby meeting today where they do free weigh ins and he's up another pound! So, he's 9 lbs, 3 oz...What a precious boy...who likes to eat. He had a fit today when I undressed him for his weigh in...the nurse said, "Boy, he has a temper!"..I thank Bill for this, truly, what a blessing :) Just kidding dah-ling!

Hmmm....non-baby news
We are just so happy that this story didn't happen in OUR neck of the woods! Though at first we were a bit worried!

As requested: 15 days old
Here is Guillermo with what I hope will be a long-time friend (once he's into that kind of thing! As you can see, he's not really that amused right now..he'd rather sleep after a milk binge!). 15 days old today. He had his two week appointment yesterday. He's up to 8 lbs, 3 oz (almost a whole pound gained) and 21 inches long (1.5 inch gain). No more appointments till he's 2 months old!

Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
First off, I'm way behind in reading what has been a big best seller since 2006...but I really liked it, so....
I went into reading this book with some reservations as I am not usually a reader of non-fiction, and I also don't usually like to read books that fall under that 'self-help' category...though this is more of a memoir about one woman helping herself...anyway, a friend lent me the book and told me how good it was, so I gave it a try. The Seattle PI review, while giving away most of the 'story', might give you an idea if it's for you or not (because it isn't probably something that all of you would enjoy after all).
I found myself to be drawn in by the author's honesty about her past, her spiritual aspirations and her thought processes while on her journey....not to mention the amazing people she met during her travels!

Crazy baby items!
So, being in the process of trying to pick up all those last minute items that the little one still needs, I spent part of my morning looking at bouncers and came across this one. Isn't it good to know that for a mere $200, your baby too can have that Donald Trump style? Well, at least until he or she is 20 pounds or so! Crazy.

Trout and kraut
So, being that we don't have very good ocean fish here, we decided to try trout the other day. I was officially against it until I had a bite! We went to get more today at our local fish market. They sell it de-boned and prepared as fillets. Bill has been frying it like my mom said she used to do (put it in a bag with a bit of flour and spices...we use lemon pepper) and then just fry it up in a pan. I also found this great fresh sauerkraut recipe in this month's Sunset (the original recipe is prepared with pork chops..and very yummy). Bill informed me that he had trout in the Black Forest when he was in Germany, so tonight's meal was Trout and kraut! The kraut is so easy and fast! All you do is cut up 3 or 4 pieces of bacon and fry them up. Once they are browned, take them out of the pan with a slotted spoon and keep the bacon fat in the pan (healthy, I know). Meantime, prepare about 2 cups of both green and red cabbage by shredding it up and set it aside. You'll also need to put a bit of kosher salt and black pepper, some caraway seeds and a pinch of fennel seeds in your mortar and pestle and grind them up together. Once you take the bacon out of the pan, add the cabbage and cook it for about 3 minutes. Now add the bacon back to the pan along with your crushed spices (the fennel seeds give it a really nice taste). Now cook until tender (about 3 minutes more) and EAT! Very lovely...and it DOES actually taste good with trout!

The Road
Just finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy today. Brother John's 30 Second Book Review gives a great short synopsis without giving the story away. I found it to be a very touching book.. I also listened to NPR's review and loved something the reviewer said, "This book announces the triumph of language over nothingness...". If the story seems hopeless, the prose with which it's written will pull you through. I'd highly recommend it!

Easy Moroccan Chicken recipe
Discovered this 'light' recipe for Moroccan Chicken with Polenta today. Turned out good and was easy peasy (ala Jamie Oliver). The recipe is from an old Cooking Light.
Easy Moroccan Chicken...a few notes. I just ground the red pepper flakes rather than buying ground ahead of time. I used plain polenta and it was fine. I might suggest more raisins than the recipe calls for if you like the sweet taste. Don't put too much of the flour mixture on the polenta as it dries out under the broiler.
